Weekly Top 5, Vol. 28 – Sunny Habits

Happy Monday. We had had a really great weekend. We enjoyed the PGA, explored local places, and played in the sunshine.

But if anyone knows where the “on” button is for kids’ listening ears, please let me know. I had a runner at the park and then a non-runner at the neighbors (i.e. I’m not coming home. I. want. to. stay. here.). I know, I know – these posts are supposed to be about happy things, but truthfulness about this parenting journey is critical too! In between talking to my children about the importance of listening to mommy and daddy who love them and want to keep them safe, here are the things making me happy…

  1. Singing My Heart Out…My husband and I have a habit of belting our hearts out to our favorite songs on the way home from dates. I think it is the safety of the darkness and the rush of pheromones. Last week, it was a Syml’s beautifully melancholy Where’s My Love. I previously considered this a pretty depressing song. But singing along with my favorite person, I heard it differently. Pain may feel lonely, but it is not singular: Does she know that we bleed the same?
  2. Treat I’ll Eat…Even though I keep asking Dean and Deluca when they are going to start carrying vegan muffins (and Matcha Lattes), I’m secretly glad they don’t. If they did, the access would be too easy. But this weekend, I noticed they started carrying these. I checked the sugar and the ingredients. Then enjoyed one as I figured out how to fix the logo up there at the top of the page (and I did! If you’re viewing this on your mobile phone, it no longer gets cut off! And you can finally click it to get back to the home page. I’m sure that was driving you as crazy as it was driving me.)
  3. Inspired by…Last week, I posted a delicious brussels recipe. Brussels aren’t always a fan favorite. So this week, I decided to tweak it. I swapped brussels for broccoli and added pine nuts. It was so good! I love that broccoli is kid-friendlier and that its prep is definitely easier.

Like how I tried to get artsy with the composition here?

  4. The Dinner Battle…My oldest has had my palette (same as my father’s) and preference for veggies since he ate his first food. My middle is the exact opposite. He is a meat man. While everyone else has embraced our diet adjustment, he’s still saying, “I miss pork, mommy!” (yes, I make it for him from time to time.) For those other times, I loved this article with some positive ideas on how to incent healthy eating in children. (Yes, the article is on a vegan website, but the tips apply to any parent trying to convince their child to eat the food in front of them.)
  5. The Power of Habit…My last post was about what I’m not eating. I got a lot of feedback about how. With so much of it, it has simply become my habit. I have to re-learn this lesson every time I try to change anything in my life. So here it is again. Passions weaken, but habits strengthen, with age, and it is the great task of youth to set the current of habit and to form the tastes which are most productive of happiness in life. – William Edward Hartpole Lecky, The Map of Life

That’s it for this week. Hope you have a good one.
